I thought I would talk to you a bit more about why I run my business in this way and by 'this way' I mean why I get second hand jackets and up-cycle them instead of sourcing new denim jackets for all my customers!
Most of the popular clothing websites that we shop from are fast fashion brands, here are some facts you should know:
-
According to the 2019 Pulse of the Fashion Industry report, the fashion industry is tied with the livestock industry as the third most polluting industry in the world.
-
Fast fashion contributes 10% of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions!
-
A lot of fast fashion brands have been found to be stealing designs from independent and small businesses that rely on these designs for their livelihood and cannot compete with the prices of these fast fashion companies!
-
Garment workers are being forced to work in unsafe conditions to create these clothes for the companies with little to no pay, often using child and slave labour.
Now I know that sometimes shopping from fast fashion companies is the only option and you can't always blame the consumer BUT the most sustainable thing you can do is reducing how much you buy!!
When you are looking for new clothes it is much better to shop second hand when you can and repairing and upcycling clothes is an amazing way to freshen up your wardrobe without the guilt!!
I know that denim is one of the worst things for the environment with the amount of water waste it produces during production and therefore I take unwanted pieces from one person, upcycle it by creating a unique custom piece and make it into something that my customers will love and wear for a long long time!!! Of course when customers send me jackets, jeans, skirts etc that they already have for me to paint that is also amazing!
Shop more sustainably as much as you can and support more small businesses!!
